10 Steps to DIY a Sea Creature Tiara

Updated: Dec 27, 2021

I recently helped design and create the décor for an underwater themed birthday party. I wanted to create special tiaras and crowns for the children that followed the theme, were easy to wear, and in general 100% kid-friendly. I settled on a design with sea creatures made out of felt material.

The step-by-step instructions are at the bottom but first is a quick 3 minute video showing how to make one of the tiaras. The total time to assemble one was less than 10 minutes.

Step 1. Collect Supplies

  • Headband

  • Cardboard & box cutter

  • Hot glue gun and extra glue sticks

  • Sea creature felt cut-outs

  • Extra felt for the crown and the backing

  • Scissors

  • Gems

Pro Tip: To save time making the sea creatures, I went to my local craft store and used their die-cut machines. Use of the die-cut machines and dies is complimentary with the purchase of the felt material.

Step 2. Using a box cutter or scissors, cut-out a piece of cardboard as a base for the creatures. This could be anything rigid enough to hold up to kids wearing them and can also take the heat of a hot glue gun. I settled on cardboard since it was readily available.

Step 3. Using the hot glue gun, glue the backing felt to the cardboard (shown as green in the video). This is meant to cover up the back of the cardboard so it looks nice. Any color of felt would work fine.

Step 4. Glue the backing cardboard piece to the headband. Make sure the cardboard is centered on the headband before gluing in place and keep in mind that extra glue will make it more durable.

Step 5. Lay out a large piece of felt over the headband to get sizing and placement. This will later be cut into the crown (shown as orange in the video).

Step 6. Glue the large felt piece to the headband front (opposite the green backing felt). You will want to position the felt piece so that most of it is above the cardboard.

Step 7. Cut out the crown shape from the large piece of felt that you just glued in place.

Step 8. Lay out and position your sea creatures along the front of the crown.

Pro Tip: When placing the felt creatures, keep in mind size and color of each. Position the pieces to compliment each other and the smaller creatures should always go on top.

Step 9. One by one, glue each creature down on the front of the crown. Start with the creatures on the bottom layer and work your way to the top layer.

Step 10. Glue on the gems to the crown tips. This is optional but I think it really emphasizes the tiara points.

And now you're done!
